Rik Middleton graduated from London Uni. With a B.Sc. Botany degree in 1968 and went into biology teaching in Coventry. He took early retirement at the end of 1994 to become a Luthier (Stringed instrument maker) and now makes classical guitars by day.
Reminded by the TV program “Watercolour Challenge” that he used to paint as a teenager, he decided to have another go at about the turn of the century. He has won several local awards at exhibitions including, most recently, Highly Commended at the Coventry Consortium Exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery in 2009 and Visitor’s Vote for Best Painting at the same exhibition 2010.
Rik paints almost entirely in watercolour in a fairly traditional style, sometimes adding Indian ink drawing in the style known as ‘Line and Wash’. His main influences have been Rowland Hilder, Edward Wesson and Alan Ingham. Favourite living artist -Tony Paul.
Landscape is his usual subject although he has done portraits, still life, wildlife and even abstracts. He will attempt anything that he thinks might have impact. He has also done home landscapes (I.e. your house) to commission.
